Reading this is heartbreaking. I see so many families who have been torn apart like this, and it is just awful.Today, this may have had a happier ending. However, even as recently as 1990, women didn't have a place to go. Men such as Jon still exist (I was married to one) and always will. We must always be grateful things are getting better, but I fear it may be too late for "Mum" and her girls.
I can and cannot imagine how horrible this woman's life has been. I am so glad her current husband makes her happy. I just wish she had known he would be there eventually.

Letter To My Estranged Daughters
This is an incredibly sad, yet hopeful book. It is clear that when a person sacrifices everything for the happiness of others without revealing the cost the effort goes unappreciated. I don't think that is the author's message, this is written as an explanation to her adult daughters and plays well as a cautionary tale.
