When Harald Naber left Germany in 1967 to seek adventure in Alaska, he had no idea what the future held for him. His first job, skinning wolves in the basement of Jonas Brothers, a wildlife museum and retail store in Anchorage, started him on a journey that continues today. How does a wolf skinner become a world famous doll maker? It perhaps surprised Harald more than anyone. UGLY DOLLS the Naber Kids Story tells Harald’s story, in his own words and pictures. In 1970, Harald carved what he called “the ugliest thing you have ever laid your eyes on” out of a 4x4 from the local builders’ supply and covered it in reindeer fur. The ugly doll, “Big Nuni,” was put on consignment at a store in Anchorage, and sold the first day. He made more dolls and they kept selling. Many dolls and other characters later, he and his wife Bette Jo sold their doll company and moved to Florida to try their hand at running a hotel. Harald and Bette Jo returned to Alaska in 1979 and more dolls and characters were created. Then, in 1984, Harald carved the first Naber Kids in an old trapper’s cabin in Homer, Alaska. They weren’t conventional dolls, they had attitude and personality. And, many people called them ugly! Since that time, Harald’s talent as a master carver has been acknowledged by collectors and his dolls have made their way into homes and collections around the world. UGLY DOLLS the Naber Kids Story is the only book written about Harald Naber and his Naber Kids. Hundreds of photographs are included with a comprehensive listing of his creations from 1970 through 2011 along with a peek into the future. UGLY DOLLS the Naber Kids Story is a collaborative effort between Harald Naber and Pat Gaudette, author of books including Sparky the AIBO Robot Dogs & Other Robotic Pets, and How To Survive Your Husband’s Midlife Crisis.

All of the photos are in grayscale and the paper is a dark yellow — the images are hard to see and the copy layout is as ugly as the dolls themselves. Certainly not worth the price tag.
It's really amazing to see someone build a business from the ground up the way Harald Naber does. The detail that goes into his work is really outstanding. This book is not only great if you are a collector, but it's also a great read just to be inspired by the work Harald Naber has done in his life.

Harald Naber has really lived the American Dream! Starting with almost nothing and building a successful business in a competitive industry. I couldn't put this book down!
my mom gave me the Naber Kid Clarence Wild Wood Baby which is large. The next year she bought me a black Tina baby which is small. These are the only Naber Kids I have but my grandma has loads of the dolls. I have looked at her book and enjoyed it very much. Mr. Naber has a lot of talent. I met him once in Scottsdale, Arizona at a doll show. I love his dolls
I was in my 40's before I purchased my first doll for me and not the grandkids. I started with pretty porcelain dolls and one day I saw a Naber Kids photo in a doll magazine. From that day forward I was hooked. Or I should say addicted. I said to myself, I'll just buy one. Naber Kids are like lays potato chips. You just can't have one. That first year every dollar I made went into Naber Kids. Yes, these kids are an addiction if you let it be. My favorites are all the Original kids starting with Molli, Jake, and Max. Then of course, the Wild Wood Babies are huge, stocky and extremely cute. They are not ugly at all. These kids grow on you. From the New Generation of Alice and Albert to all the little guys like Gilbert etc. The book is a great rendition of a man's creation from Eskimo dolls to wonderful kids. You may think at first they are Ugly little kids; but believe me they grow on you and become a part of your family.
I enjoyed it tremendously. A wonderful story and resource.
